Fear of Retaliation from Their Employer

Currently, many women choose not to take paid or unpaid leave when it is available for fear of retaliation from their employer.

Even when employers provide leave, paid or unpaid, many women choose not to take it because they fear retaliation from their employers if they take time off to recover from a medical condition or care for a family member. Approximately one in six employees has been or has a family member who has been penalized by an employer for taking time off to deal with an illness.
